信中瑞佐和普金斯分享他過去抗癌的故事，「我18歲時被診斷患有癌症，那段時間是我人生中最悲慘的時刻，但我不得不鼓起勇氣面對一切，試圖保持正面態度接受治療，最後重獲健康，現在我相信你也可以跟我一樣抗癌成功。」
經過多次的化療後，瑞佐抗癌成功，並在2011年站上大聯盟舞台，且自2014年起連續3年入選明星賽，至今身體沒有出現任何問題，並用自己的成功案例，帶給癌症病童希望。

日前癌症病童普金斯（Parker Hopkins）的父母與瑞佐聯繫，希望他能鼓勵孩子抗癌；當瑞佐聽到消息時，毫不猶豫地寫信激勵孩子，並捐贈2500美元（約新台幣8萬元）幫助孩童度過艱難時刻，而這已經不是他第一次幫助癌症病童。

2007年瑞佐於選秀時被紅襪選中，隔年他準備站上夢想的舞台時，不料被診斷出患有淋巴癌，那時他只有18歲。他說，「當我被告知有癌症時，我哭了，抱著家人痛哭一場。」但之後為了繼續打球，他收起淚水，展開抗癌之路。
